Legislative Assistant
Mission: Assist California Professional Firefighters in successfully fulfilling its governmental advocacy goals by providing critical legislative support services in the areas of administration, communication, research and public/member relations.
Reports to: Governmental Advocates and Legislative Director
Responsibilities and duties include, but may not be limited to assisting the Governmental Advocates and Legislative Director in the following areas
- Legislative bill tracking, including entering CPF-approved bill positions into legislative tracking system;
- Running a daily action report and bill calendar for both committee hearings and floor sessions;
- Researching, as instructed, related bill information, such as relevant code sections, prior legislation, analyses, votes, legal cases and other organizational positions;
- Monitoring daily legislative committee hearings and floor sessions;
- Managing the Department’s calendar by scheduling appointments, as requested, including appointments with legislators and other elected officials, legislative staff, candidates, state agency officials and other parties of interest;
- Ensuring that legislative correspondence, including letters in support/opposition of bills, is generated in a timely manner via US mail, email and/or fax,
- Managing legislative correspondence, including the scanning and filing of such correspondence in appropriate bills folders on the CPF server;
- Maintaining legislative contacts’ database, both in Microsoft Contacts and on the administrative section of the organization’s web site;
- Developing legislative news stories for the legislative section of the organization’s web site, as well as updating those stories, as directed, as bills of interest move through the Legislature;
- Assist in fielding affiliate legislative inquiries; and
- Supporting other departments and CPF projects, as needed.
Necessary Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Effective written and oral communication skills;
- Proficient Microsoft Office-based word processing skills;
- Experience in legislative tracking - Capitol Track or State Net legislative tracking skills preferred;
- Familiarity with California’s legislative and executive branches;
- Ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently under deadline;
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively; and
- Ability to exercise professional judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Education and Work Experience: Relevant education, experience and knowledge, as determined by the CPF, or a BA with major emphasis political science, public administration or related field. Prior legislative and/or political campaign experience is preferred.
